There are many well-known generalities revolving around what hackers are, what they do, and what their goals are. Take for instance the following list.
- Hackers Exploit Human Weaknesses – Social engineering (manipulating people into giving up sensitive information) is often more effective than technical exploits.
- Some Hackers Work for Governments – Many nations employ hackers for cyber warfare, intelligence gathering, and defense.
- Ransomware is a Huge Cyber Threat – Cybercriminals lock files and demand payment to restore access, causing billions in damages annually.
- The Dark Web is a Hotspot for Hackers – Many illicit hacking activities, from selling stolen data to hacking tools, happen on the dark web.
- Passwords are a Weak Link – Weak or reused passwords make it easy for hackers to break into accounts using brute force or credential stuffing.
- Phishing is the Most Common Attack – Fake emails or messages trick people into revealing sensitive information or downloading malware.
However, I’d like to share some lesser-known facts about hackers and talk about some misnomers that seem to be circulating about these misunderstood souls.
If you’ve ever seen pictures of Hackers at work, or “in the wild”, you would notice some similarities. Most of these pictures are manufactured. But sometimes less cautious hackers let their guard down and are photographed without their knowledge. These pictures also contain similarities. Let’s dive in.
- Have you ever seen a Hacker doing his work on a park bench on a sunny day? Or even in a well-lit office? Neither have I. And I have it on good authority that the majority of Hackers suffer from a condition called photophobia. Photophobia is a condition where the eyes become overly sensitive to bright light, causing discomfort or pain. I know, it’s hard to believe. But I believe it. I also think they sunburn very easily.
- Hackers very rarely show their faces for obvious reasons. But no one has ever gotten a clear picture of one. Why is that? I’ve read studies indicating that many, if not all Hackers possess an Eldritch concealment power which allows them to conceal their features.
- Have you ever seen a Hacker wearing a tank top or a turtleneck? Of course not. That would be silly. They always wear hoodies and I’m fairly confident there are two reasons why. First, Hacker organizations are very uncompromising about their dress codes and require strict adherence to the hoodie policy. Second, the Hacker company store allows for a hefty discounts on bulk hoodie purchases.
